Gervinho's Wig!

Continuing with our theme of great hair pieces in sports, Cote and I started the new soccer podcast "Gervinho's Wig," in homage to the great Ivorian Arsenal striker (and his wig). First episode is up: we talk El Clasico, Arsenal-Man U, Man City-Tottenham, Dempsey's hat trick and the Qatar bribe...I mean decision...to host the World Cup. Check it out!

I've been reading Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby , an autobiography that chronicles his life as an Arsenal fan (NOTHING like the Jimmy Fallon Red Sox movie). It's extremely well written and even a non-football fan can appreciate it. I wanted to include a passage I found profound about fan superstitions. They're silly but I'll admit I'm guilty of them too (I've been wearing my Giants #89 Bavaro jersey ever since week 16 this season). After trying a number of superstitions, Hornby writes:

Nothing...has ever been any good. But what else can we do when we're so weak? We invest hours each day, months each year, years each lifetime in something over which we have no control; is it any wonder then, that we are reduced to creating ingenious but bizarre liturgies designed to give us the illusion that we are powerful after all, just as every other primitive community has done when faced with a deep and apparently impenetrable mystery?

I encourage you read on.
